The Story of Bethel Baptist Church

Where does a church like Bethel have its beginning? Is it when a building goes up, sod is turned, or a pastor is chosen? Or does it begin when the Holy Spirit places in the hearts of believers the desire for a place of worship where God’s Word is preached? For eight years, men and women had been praying that such a church would be established close by – a church where men, women and children would hear the Word of God and come to have a relationship with Christ.

In July 1944, the church was formed – first meeting in homes. The group began to grow and soon needed to search for a building. Longwood Baptist Church had been closed for ten years and was found to be available for the sum of one dollar per week! As the group grew, the need for a more permanent home became apparent, and it was decided to build in Strathroy. The first Bethel Baptist Church was built on the corner of High and Princess Streets and was officially opened on January 19, 1947. According to available records, by July 1947 the membership had climbed to 44. On May 13 of the same year, Bethel Baptist Church was officially received into the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches and the pastor was ordained. In 1956, a new lot was purchased at the end of Princess Street, where our present church stands. There have been two expansions at this site over the years – the first addition opening in 1982 and the second in 1992.

The people of Bethel have fellowshipped together, prayed together, wept together, laughed together, and worked together – and now are praising God together for all He has done. A large parcel of land (162 acres) was purchased south of the existing church building in 2007, with plans for building a new facility in the future.

Our desire at Bethel is to become fully committed followers of Christ in everything we do – in our church, in our community, and in our world.
